Ganesh Chaturthi, is an occasion or a day on which Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati, is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees. It is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi in Sanskrit, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu. It is the birthday of Lord Ganesha. The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). This typically comes sometime between August 20 and September 15. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Ananta Chaturdashi.
While held all over India, it is at its most elaborate in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and other areas which were former states of the Maratha Empire.
Modak is considered to be the favorite food item of Lord Ganesh. It is customary to offer twenty-one or one hundred eight modaks to Lord Ganesh.
"Ganesha banda, Kai Kadbu tinda, Chikkerel bidda, Dodkerel yedda!!" If you don’t know Kannada, don’t worry about it :)
1 cup hurgadle/puttani/chickpea
1 cup desiccated coconut/kobri
2 tsp cardamom powder
1 cup fine sugar
2 cups maida
2 tsp turmeric
Oil for deep frying
Method: -
1. Grind hurgadle, cardamom powder, sugar & coconut together. The mixture should be coarse.
2. Add turmeric to maida for color. Also add little oil. Mix enough water and prepare the dough. The consistency should be that of the chapatti dough.
3. Make as many small balls as possible out of the dough.
4. Roll out puris from these balls.
5. In each puri place a spoonful of filling & then give the modak desired shape.
6. The puri should be tightly closed from all sides, else while frying if the filling comes out, it spoils the other modaks as well.
7. Deep fry all the modaks & store them in air tight containers.
